Amongst the commonest of all birds in the region, Eurasian Tree Sparrow are excellent colonists and make their way even to remote clearings. Crown chestnut; throat, sides of face and ear patch black, contrasting with cold buff underpants; back and wings brown mottled with black; wings with two pale bars. Commonly feeding on ground, active even at night in bright cities. Found in all open habitats from scrub and coasts to gardens, cultivation, towns, reaching clearings and villages in mountains. Occurs throughout Europe and Asia to Sumatra and Java, introduced to Borneo, North America and Australia; resident.

Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus) 45cm

Through a scavenger, this kite is one of the more spectacular coastal birds, often soaring in thermals in large numbers. Adults reddish-chestnut with white head and upper breast. Juvenile dull brown with pale patch under wing at base of primaries. In flight, long but broad angled wings, and long square-ended tail distinguish from larger Sea Eagle and smaller, slimmer harriers. Call a thin cat-like mew. Feeds on mudflats and open ground, especially on carrion and small prey. Found typically near coasts, especially mangroves, occasionally inland and big rivers. Occurs in south-east Asia down to Australia; a common resident, especially on the west coast.

Black and Yellow Broadbill (Eurylaimus ochromalus) 16cm

Frequently heard but seldom seen, this bird has a little clown face and emarkable bill colour. Small, stubby, black and white; black head with complete white collar bordered below by black; pink breast, yellow rump and yellow flashes on black wings. Brilliant turquoise and yellow bill, yellow eye. Call a long trill starting slowly dee, dee, de de de…, without the introductory bang heard in call of Banded Broadbill E. javanicus. Found in lowland forest to 700m, logged forest, overgrown plantations. Occurs in the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo; resident.

Grey-chinned Minivet (Pericrocotus solaris) 18cm

Varying light conditions can make this bird difficult to separate from the Scarlet Minivet P. flammeus. Male has grey throat and face that need to be looked for carefully; underparts more orange (but juvenile male Scarlet also has somewhat orange underparts); no separate patch of colour on secondaries. Female grey and yellow as other minivets but throat whitish (not yellow), and no trace of yellowish on rntirely grey forehead. Behaviour similar to other minivets, in small parties or more often pairs. Found in hill and montane forest, about 800m upwards. Occurs from the Himalayas to Indochina and Borneo; resident.
