CATTLE EGRET Bubulcus ibis 50cm

One of the world’s most successful colonists, having spread this century
from the old world to the American and Australia. Small, thick nick egret, pure white in non-breeding plumage with strong yellow bill and dark legs. Before breeding, head, neck, back and breast become suffused with buff, bill yellow, leg red. Often with cattle or buffaloes, feeding mainly on insects disturbed by them. Found especially near marshes, pools and rice fields, and grassland. Occurs now almost throughout the world; here a non-breeding migrant.
